What is Shift 2 Unleashed?

Shift 2: Unleashed (also known as Need for Speed: Shift 2 – Unleashed) is a racing video game, the seventeenth installment of the Need for Speed series. It was developed by Slightly Mad Studios and published by Electronic Arts. The game serves as a direct sequel to Need for Speed: Shift and expands on many aspects that were introduced in the original.[3][4] Shift 2: Unleashed was released worldwide during March and April 2011. Overview

  • Actually a fun simcade console racer experience
  • I am streaming the PC version to a tv with an NVIDIA Shield which provides for the highest resolution and framerate compared to actually running on consoles
  • Lots of interesting visual effects to heighten the intensity of racing
  • Handling and physics model are simcade, maybe more arcade than sim, but there's enough there to make it compelling, I think

Comparison to Console Sims like Gran Turismo

  • S2U may be underrated as a console simcade due to its poor presentation on the PS3 and clunky controller implementation
  • Playing at top spec on a PC with a controller (preferably streamed to a big tv) is a much better experience
  • Having given it a chance, I feel like if you can separate the controller handling from the physics handling in your mind then you can start to see that S2U actually handles like Gran Turismo, at least the GT Sport that I've played
  • GT's controller feels better but the way cars behaviour is quite similar in things like weight transfer and acceleration and braking points

Controller Settings

NVIDIA Shield Controller

  • Steering Sensitivty: 6
  • Throttle Deadzone: 5
  • Throttle Sensitivty: 50
  • Brake Sensitivity: 50
  • Speed Sensitivity: 100

Xbox Core Wireless Gaming Controller

  • NVIDIA Shield Controller settings are a good starting point but I can tell it needs further tuning
