The trade-off is usually minimal content as in the case of marketing tie-ins like BMW M3 Challenge, with a single car, or Copa Petrobas de Marcas with a single series. The exception is games that are very old and not possible to buy anymore, such as Richard Burns Rally, now considered Abandonware
On the plus side, there are a number of truly free, truly simulation tier driving games that beginners can try to see if they like simulation driving before committing a lot of time and money into it.
